This is very interesting story of the Star of David. The Menorah actually had been the main symbol of judaism over the centuries. But the Star of David is easier to wear around your neck.
By the way, I do not wear the Magen David around my neck to remind me of who I am. It is there to let others know who I am. Especially in these days.
Thanx. Yes, a Menora can be problematic around the neck, especially with burning candlesβ¦ I know who I am, I am proud of who I am and I donβt need to show or hide from anyone. Writing about it all makes me even prouder.
Dear Gayle. You are the second person who has brought this to my attention, which means that at least two people are reading me attentively. I know why this is happening, and will try and use a different (and better) way to edit. Thank you so much.
Does anyone else reading these fascinating posts experience duplication? Within the article some paragraphs are repeated twice? Is this on my end or purposeful for some unknown reason by the author? Thanks.
No, your`e not seeing double, and I am not testing to see whether your`e paying attention and I don`t was to doubly fascinate you. Its my shitty editing that is at fault here. Fixing it now, and thank you so much for the heads up.
Wonderful piece, Elli! I just discovered it after following links back from todayβs post on jam. Iβve come across so many βJewishβ stars and swastikas in my travels and have always wondered about their origins and meaning. Thanks for this detailed discussion that fills in so many gaps in my knowledge.
Growing up, I heard stories of my father and his familyβs narrow escape from Nazi Germany in the late 1930s and have seen many a Holocaust exhibit showing the ubiquitous yellow stars Jews were forced to wear during that horrific time. I was always reluctant to wear anything that identified me as Jewish, especially a mogen David, even though Iβm not ashamed of who I am. The repurposing of sacred symbols to promote hatred is what scared me then and still does. Unfortunately, that seems to be as old as human history.

I can almost visualize the problematic results produced by burning ΧΧ ΧΧ¨Χ candles in a Far Side cartoon created by Gary Larson.
well this definitely shows our age, since we know what the Far Side is....LOL
Thank you for such a prompt response! I should have posted last month as I've been seeing this for awhile:).

I wear my star proudly through my writing.
Beautifully put, Elli!
An interesting story! Thank you ππ»
Thank you for reading
Actually you may be right. I am just not sure in solidarity of whatβ¦ π€
Doubt it. I am pretty sure I am the first Jewish person here since the last pogrom of the crusades
Yes. And I thank them for giving me the ideaβ¦
